Songhai was a great civilization that formed from a small fishing community to a kingdom of Africa. Fishermen settled in Geo and grew in population. Songhai used to be under the control of Mali, but became independent in 1375. When Mali weakened, Songhai took over, but they were soon to grow more.
The most important person was Ali the Great. He ruled during the growth and height of Songhai's power. He expanded the land to 2,000 miles and brought prosperity to Songhai.
With Ali the great, the kingdom of Songhai grew. Ali the great took over many cities and expanded territory until gold mines were in reach. With the gold, Songhai became rich and powerful.
No matter how great a civilization is, they always come to an end. Songhai fought with civil war against Ali the great's son, who was not Muslim. The war weakened them along with droughts and diseases. So when the Moroccan army invaded, Songhai lost the war. In 1612, Songhai fell.
